Some fine old Vostoks

Pictured with a modern Amphibia to illustrate the difference in case size.

Not really a review this time. Just a few photos of a pair of Vostok Cosmonauts and another model bearing the image of a Vostok spaceship that I recently acquired. The graphic on the two Cosmonauts, showing a profile view of a cosmonaut wearing a helmet, is hard to come by. To find two of them in excellent condition was real luck. The black one is even more unusual. It uses an older style case design that is considerably larger than current Vostok Amphibia cases. Not a common case style at all. All three models use the 2416b automatic movement, are rated at 200 meters water resistance and have Vostok's thick acrylic crystal. All are running strong thankfully. Some posters at Watchuseek.com have speculated that the one with the silver colored dial actually has a picture of an atomic bomb on the face. Levenberg's book Russian Wristwatches, however, identifies it as a spaceship.

Hi ed,

Love the Vostoks. It sure looks like a bomb to me on the dial!
Where did you get the gray woven band? Nice one.

I know what you mean. Not sure one way or another. As for the band, it is new old stock made in "West Germany". Got it at

I would call them and ask about the old West German nylon bands if you want one. They'll know what you are talking about.

Ed,

Recently have discovered Russian watches and ordered the Levenberg book. Have you ever ordered from this site? Any thoughts?

Levenberg's book is a good resource. I have ordered from him without incident. That being said, head over to the watchuseek.com Russian watch forum and search for him there. You will find a variety of different views of him as a seller.

WOW - is all I can say there is so much info on that site my head is spinning. Thanks for the advice? I don't recognize you from Cardozo law school (I graduated last year), but I'm assuming you are at another local school. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Ed, i'm from Ukraine and i'm collecting russian watch too (because any other brands very expensive to collecting in my country... Oldy Panerai cost like luxury auto :)

Vostok with silver dial have "Komandisrskie"-style case (it start producing in late-perestroika time, 1988-90). Watch in thats case type never have real 200 m water resistance, really it may be have 50 m. Picture in dial really looks like exactly a some sort of the nuclear bomb 8-() But it look similar to soviet military space shuttle "Spiral" too...
Sorry for bad english

It does look like a bomb for sure. Levenberg identifies it as a space ship in his book. I'm not sure myself either way.

Hi Ed...Sorry if this post shows up more than once. I just bought a watch on Ebay for my husband and now wonder if there could be a radiation issue. Supposedly made at Molnija factory in 1957. Any help would be appreciated, thank you. Here's the link to the item...

I am not aware of any Molnija watches that used radium lume. I don't believe that anyone, the Russians included used radium much after 1960. It is possible I suppose that someone added the lume paint afterward but radium was not commonly available to most folks as I understand it.
